I am hoping to get a re-design of the BCA page (on WOSW) done in time for the next comp, the Mar-Apr 2009 awards. My simple banners have served us well enough until now but they are looking quite plain, and the layout of the page has hardly changed at all since the third competition. I do not have much talent with graphics, or layout. I am hoping that others can help me. What I need is, someone (or a few people) with graphics talent, to design - * new headings (the "how to enter", "rules" etc banners) * a new logo and title banner * (optionally) templates for winner badges I also would love someone with a bit of flair in layouts, to help me set everything out nicely, and in the correct order, on the page. It can be hard to get everything looking nice with only one column of 630 pixels of width! If you think you can help out, or know someone who could, please leave a note in this thread and I will contact you (or them). PS Empy, on your website you have a nice graphic for linking to both WOSW and the BCAs, and I especially like the font and style you have Best Collection Awards written in, how did you do that?

This one? The whole thing was made with GIMP. The golden text was made with GIMP's Glossy Logo option (Horizon 2 gradient for the text, Golden gradient for the outline. Outline size at 1 or 2. Took only the Grow-Me layer.). The font is called A New Hope. I'm willing to put together some images for consideration. Do you have anything in particular in mind as to size, content (beside "the "how to enter", "rules" etc"), color(s), or anything else?

Yep, that one! Cheers for the instructions.
As for content, I think a new brand identity is needed first - a new overarching theme that will dictate a new logo, a new banner, and then the theme will also dictate the design of the headers.
I was wondering if part of our new theme could be an image of an actual award statuette type thing. Like an Oscar statue although obviously with something star-wars-collecting-related instead of a mannequin with a sword. We could use that as the logo (it would become very recognisable) and then incorporate it into the banner and heading designs.
Obviously a theme would need to dictate the fonts, colours and styles of text that would be replicated in all elements. Like Empy's brilliant styled writing.
The winners badges that I make are not something I am particularly proud of; they especially need a new design and some nicety. So a template of a new winners badge would be good.
So in terms of content, it sort of depends on how you see the BCA page being laid out, but at least we would probably need-
* Logo * Banner * Headings (although maybe your design indicates that these are just normal, styled text rather than images) * Winners badges
Maybe you could also think about banner advertisements that we can ask people to put on their own sites and blogs (preferably something that sizes down well, or perhaps a series of different ads at different sizes). These sort of things, though, can usually be done pretty easily once a design theme has been created.
As for size, everything is dictated by the fixed 630 pixel-width of WOSW blogs, which decides the max width of headings and the banner, and obviously affects how tall elements can be (without looking odd). You can use really whatever sizes you want so long as they look good!

Hmm tough choice there
Do I like the classic sith red lightsaber. Or the all gold statue.
Plus if we go all out public (advertising ect.) can we get in trouble with Lego?
I know Lucasfilm has been very supportive of fans using their copyrighted material, but I'm not sure how lego would react if they ever seen it. Just a thought, Love the images.
I also plan on asking Reverand Mandrake to come on board for the sake of making 6 badges every 2 months. Will let you know how that goes.

I do like the banner/ page separators that are being used now. We haven't really come up with any better yet. (We have been doing BCA graphics for HOURS now).
I haven't really thought of a good background solution that won't conflict with text or pictures.
In the history there are a few minor background images that look almost like Jedi watermarks. Those weren't bad.
Ali Fett and I are working on some advertisements. One of us will post some possibilities soon.
Also Ali has created a Dummy page with basically a no name to work on layout. When its okay we will shoot you the name of it.

Oh, my stars, that is some wonderful artwork! Thank you so much Empy, Ali and DV; I am hugely impressed!
I was ready to state "want" to Empy's all-gold LEGO Vader statuette, but Lord Vilgore raises a good point, we would probably want to avoid using anything that infringes on non-LucasFilm intellectual property. Shame, too, since LEGO Vader really does suggest Star Wars Collecting in a big way.
If we do go with LEGO Vader, my vote is for the all-gold one - the usual standard for awards statuettes.
Then we have Ali's awesome statue of Vader holding aloft a Death Star, and I like that design very much - is there a chance we could see it in gold? Or are my eyes tricking me and it is already gold? It's amazing anyway, and what material did you make it out of?
You guys have been making BCA graphics for hours? What a way to spend your weekend! Ha ha! Thanks guys, I am stunned by your efforts.
I had completely forgotten about the logo watermarks I had made. They were pretty cool, if I do say so myself! Nah, but they were faint enough to not reduce the legibility of the text. Perhaps a reworking of that idea could work, although we would want to select one or two logos at most to use. Either our own, or the rebel and empire logos.
I love "lack of participation" and "last supper", but I think they are based on original, non-LFL artwork, so we might run into IP issues again. The "lack of participation" quote just has to appear on at least one of our ads, though!
"Join me" and "Big Guns" are simply awesome; they use Star Wars figures which is thematically correct, and they are eye-grabbing and funny - exactly what an advertisement needs. Wonderful!
Thank you so much everyone for your awesome contributions so far. Obviously a lot of talent here.
PS - who is being crushed by Vader underneath Jar-Jar? Is that a McEwan Obi-Wan?
