Thanks for your comments, guys.
So how about this for a provisional list?
Best Recreation Episode V Best Holiday Scene (free-form scene creation) Best Custom Figure Best Ewoks Collection (yeah, I agree, they'll be popular!) Best Star Wars Costume Worst Dooku Figure
That is six categories, everyone still OK with six?
We don't have six sponsors so we'll have to work out additional prizes. I can donate a prize and I can also make up any shortfall with SWS vouchers.
WOSW does indeed still censor Darth Tyranus, what a nuisance! We'll have to refer to him as Count Dooku, but then again most people know him by that name anyway.
If there are no problems or issues, we'll upgrade that list from provisional to actual.

Looks like a great bunch of catagories! One more thing, is this round, and all future rounds, going to also be judged with public votes too?

Speaking purely from an individual perspective, I remain personally in favour of judges. I think their votes have been more informed than the public votes, there are no concerns about vote-rigging and having to assess the authenticity of voters and I believe they add cachet and stature to the awards (in the way that winning an Oscar is considered a higher acclaim than winning a People's Choice Award).
From a practical standpoint, it is more work for a public vote, the votes take longer to arrive, and frequently the number of public voters has been so few - less than ten on one occasion, never more than 16 - that we are simply not getting a broad base of public opinion, and since that is the only reason to use the public instead of judges, there does not appear, to me, any justification for using the public vote.
It might make us appear democratic, but it does not have the desired effect, and so in the end, using a public vote means we get neither a broad public opinion nor the informed assessment of our judges.
Having said all that, I know that my view is a minority view in the committee, and that many of you want the public vote to return. This is not my competition and I am always ready to implement whatever the committee as a whole decides.
And I acknowledge that we do get an advantage with the public vote, that is, that people become more involved with the awards (rather than just watching them) which usually means they become more interested in them and we've seen a some people go from watchers, to public voters, to entrants.
I will say, though, that having a competition with both adjudged awards, and publicly-chosen awards, is confusing. Whenever we do that, we always get people sending in their votes for the adjudged awards as well as the public ones. It also doubles the amount of work to do. So I would strongly prefer that either all awards are adjudged, or all awards are voted on by the public, rather than mixing the two.
This is an important issue and we need to decide soon what format BCA11 will take, so please everyone tell us what you think!

I'd like to incorporate more public voting into the future competitions, but if we hold this competition off while we weigh pros and cons and methods for doing so, we're going to miss our self-imposed Halloween deadline.
At this point, it seems best to go forward with panel-judged categories and try to work out a batter public-judged system while the competition runs. If we find something we can all agree on in time for the judging, we can choose a category and spam public vote requests every which way, calling it a surprise.
Re-involving our MIA judges/council members would help too. Or maybe we do need to see about bringing others in to join the judging panel. We regret having no more than 10 members of the public voting, but we currently have fewer than 5 of us doing it as the panel.

Yep, we don't have to limit ourselves. We can open this competition with all text regarding the judging method removed, and then just go with what we decide in the meantime, whatever combination of public and panel votes. Or even better perhaps we can use the classic "and/or" conjunction to cover ourselves; i.e. "entries will be judged by our expert panel of judges and/or a public vote". Looks like I was a little optimistic with my late Sunday deadline, my apologies (messed up weekend) but late Monday is looking good! If we find something we can all agree on in time for the judging There must be a website for this kind of thing! Online voting, I mean. It'd be more transparent than just having me and someone else each doing a separate count of e-mailed votes, so it'd be worth the time it takes to set it up (which shouldn't be too much anyway).

I was wrong about the custom figure catagory. I guess customs are not that popular amongst us.
